Mike Geiger, President and CEO of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, joins us from AFP’s Global Headquarters in Virginia.

One of Mike’s goals for AFP is to focus on issues beyond fundraising training and education, addressing topics such as diversity and inclusion, gender inequity and building cultures of philanthropy that affect our work every day. In particular, he will be discussing the work of AFP’s Women’s Impact Initiative and sharing the results of the first-ever comprehensive survey about sexual harassment in the fundraising profession, along with other research and initiatives. Mike will also be talking about the state of the fundraising profession and what’s ahead for the fundraising community in 2019.

Some of the issues he’ll be exploring include:

    • Demographics: What is the makeup of women in the profession, and what do we know about them?
    • Gender Equity: How do we close the gender gap in fundraising, tackle implicit bias, and develop leadership skills to move women into leadership positions—as fundraisers and donors?
    • Barriers to Leadership: How do we understand and overcome additional obstacles women face on the road to leadership?
    • Collaborating with leaders in other sectors to help fuel and support this initiative, as well as create a more inclusive culture of philanthropy.
    • Sexual Harassment: AFP initiatives to spot harassment, provide advice for taking action, create best practice standards for organizations, etc

The Planned Giving Study: New Insights from Data on Planned Gifts

presented by Claudine A. Donikian, JD, MBA - President & CEO Pentera

Joint Meeting with Charitable Gift Planners Tampa Bay

This session presents findings and recommendations from “The Planned Giving Study,” a multiphase research study commissioned by Ms. Donikian and researched by Indiana University that provides important new insights about actual donors of actual planned gifts and offers helpful recommendations for planned giving programs.

An in-depth analysis of legacy society membership data has been conducted. The study explored the following questions:

    • What are the characteristics of legacy society members? Are there any changes in membership profiles over time?
    • Who changed, or canceled, their planned gifts after they first joined the legacy society?
    • How do age, ethnicity, gender, family structure, and location influence bequest donor behavior?
    • Which types of planned giving vehicles and instruments did these members choose?
    • How much did members give or plan to give through their planned gifts?
    • Which types of programs received their planned gifts support?

How Generation Z will Impact Your  Fundraising

Monnie Wertz – The University of Tampa

Over the last thirty years, researchers William Strauss and Neil Howe have postulated on the different generations within American society and how those generational differences occur.  Through their work, they have provided language and characteristics through which to understand and contrast different segments of the population as they relate to school, work, and personal lives.  Going forward, new voices are emerging to continue their work, particularly as it relates to the next generation, Generation Z.  As this generation begins to enter all aspects of our society, fund-raising professionals need to be prepared to understand how they could and should affect their practice.  Participants will be provided an overview of current research and specific applications to community service/fund-raising behaviors.  Suggestions will be made for review of current processes and possible new strategies to pursue.
